Description:

Learning physics? Teaching physics? Have an uncontrollable desire to simulate physical systems or numerically solve physics problems?’Real Physics’ is a touch-based, real-time, point-particle simulator of Newtonian dynamics in two dimensions for the iPhone and iPod Touch. (No internet connection required.) It is capable of modelling with high accuracy a wide class of high school and University level mechanics problems that you set up yourself. It is also a fairly general 2D physics engine capable of obtaining accurate numerical results for a large class of systems that cannot be solved analytically. Features include the ability to dynamically generate free-body diagrams, trajectories, and ‘versus-time’ graphs. In addition to a standard set of ‘external forces’, bodies

can be subject to essentially arbitrary user-specified position, velocity and time-dependent forces (like inverse square law forces, nonlinear restoring forces, or external driving forces). Bodies can also be constrained to arbitrary user-defined constraint curves or surfaces (with or without realistic friction), or connected to each other via springs or over a pulley. Finally, the ability to specify a ‘halting condition’ on any physical property of a body that can be graphed as a function of time means that ‘Real Physics’ can be used to numerically solve a wide range of problems commonly encountered in high school through sophomore level physics (specifically mechanics).Bundled with 18 built-in examples to get you started on simulating physical systems, I hope that ‘Real Physics’ will be as valuable an addition to any student’s or teacher’s arsenal of tools for approaching physics as it has been for me!
