“Something in the AIr” Should Mean a Tethered iPhone

I received my MacBook Air today. It is as gorgeous and slim as I had hoped it would be. I installed my complete suite of commonly-used applications using remote disc and the way it hooked up to my home airport network made me actually believe I could live a world without wires.

But there is one thing that the MacBook Air does not have. One thing that I think Apple missed the boat on: no hassle iPhone tethering. I believe that if the MacBook Air contained software that uploaded to a synced iPhone to give it tethering ability, Apple would be selling a ton more MacBook Airs.

Although the technology exists already with the popular Tinyproxy application, it is only available to jailbroken iPhones and the EDGE network is painfully slow. But it would be a great feature to at least have the option to use and should the rumored 3G iPhone ever come out it would be a no-brainer.

As Don wrote earlier, wireless syncing would make sense for the Air and the iPhone. But a tethered iPhone package would sell more MacBook Airs and iPhones.

So why hasn’t it happened yet? Does Apple want to wait for the 3G iPhone? Is AT&T concerned about increased data usage?

  2. If it will be good in the future, that’s when Apple will do it.

  4. What about security implication & DRM, ... is that why Apple is not keen? Is Apple allowed to transmit Hollywood movies over the Air? Maybe that’s why they don’t do that to avoid a fight over limitation to the consumers. If you can’t make it work right, why even attempt it.
