iPhone version of OmniFocus on Omni’s to-do list

Long-time Macintosh developer The Omni Group made its own splash at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference this week, showing off a version of OmniFocus for the iPhone.

OmniFocus can take advantage of the iPhone’s location feature to tailor your to-dos to where you are.

OmniFocus is a task-management application that lets you see what you have to do in a particular project. The great thing about OmniFocus—which has been available in Mac form since earlier this year—is that it can be any type of task, from a shopping list to to-dos for your work projects.

The iPhone version of OmniFocus will add some cool new features. For instance, by tapping into the phone’s ability to pinpoint your current location, OmniFocus can create a list of actions you need to complete nearby. Imagine heading downtown, tapping a button and noticing that you needed to pick something up at the grocery store. If you needed several items, OmniFocus will automatically create a shopping list for you.

OmniFocus can also give you directions to the store based on your current location.

Omni Group CEO Ken Case, spent some time going over the application with me at WWDC and said the iPhone version of the program solves one major problem the company has for some time—the ability to capture users’ ideas easily when they’re away from their computer.

Case, for example, would use his handheld to e-mail himself ideas or tasks to be entered into OmniFocus once he got back to his computer. Now that OmniFocus can be part of the iPhone, those ideas and to-dos can be entered on the spot. You can even add add a picture or audio to accompany the idea.

It gets even better for OmniFocus users. The iPhone app will sync wirelessly with any WebDAV server, so the desktop and iPhone versions of OmniFocus will always be up-to-date.

The Omni Group plans to have OmniFocus for iPhone available on the App Store when it opens.
