iPhone could replace the PSP and DS as the ultimate mobile console

The comparison chart shown above is a clear depiction of exactly how much potential the iPhone has in terms of gaming. Not only does the iPhone nearly double the processing power of the current portable power king- the PSP- it has a user base and software groundwork that would greatly facilitate the development and distribution of games. The SDK itself is proof that Apple is making moves to encourage games on the iPhone, but what is most important to take into consideration is the sheer amount of time that was devoted to games at the SDK event.

  3. Given that the Iphone costs at least twice as much as a DS or PSP and comes locked to a single service provider with a hefty contract commitment its hardly a viable gaming platform. There are four DS’s and one PSP in my household, but their will never be 5 Iphones unless I win the lottery.

Errrr.... hello? The iPod Touch runs everything the iPhone does, is contract free, not locked to any provider, costs much less, is just as powerful and will be in the hands of gizillions of people.

    > its hardly a viable gaming platform.

It is the ultimate gaming platform, based on a combination of power, pocketability, the accelerometers used to control it, and multi-user wi-fi… not to mention the potentially huge market and massive support from the very top gaming software houses that is already *well* under way.

Oh… and for the price, you also get a music player, stunning video player, email, web browsing and a whole world of free applications to come!

  5. For anyone who doesn’t quite get it yet, here are the links…

Apple Demo - Touch Fighter (written in two weeks)

In addition to the above, there are unseen factors that also come into play. The SDK (Software Development Kit) for the iPhone / iTouch is a dream to use compared with other mobile platforms.

The tools used to build software for the iPhone / iTouch are the same tools used to build desktop applications for mac desktop computers. Developers are currently flocking to use it.

Writing software for the iPhone is a similar experience to writing software for a desktop computer. The iPhone, iTouch, Apple TV, desktop and laptop macs all use the Leopard OSX operating system.

This is a highly significant factor, since developers writing software for one of those devices will be able to write software for all of them. Given a choice between spending time writing for the half-powered PSP, or for Apple’s entire range of products, guess where developers are going to be targeting their efforts???

    NO CONTEST.
