iPhone SDK will turn iTunes into mobile software store

Apple’s upcoming SDK is poised to change the way cell phone users purchase mobile applications. By using the same easy-to-use purchasing strategy they implemented in music sales and iPod games, Apple will allow developers to sell their applications for a set price. On one hand, this means more money for hard-working developers, but on the other, this signals the end of the free third-party apps era.

  1. Hopefully they’ll still allow developers to list their apps as freeware on iTunes (much as they do on apple.com for OS X). If nothing else, maybe they could do the “Free App of the Week” (much lamer, but still better than NO free apps).
