It turns out that there may be a little more to the story than was originally reported. The victim has reached out in regards to the coverage his story has been getting and shed some interesting light on the subject. It turns out that the original news report did not give all of the details and this may not have been simply a cases">case of attempted iPhone robbery.
MacBlogz is reporting that they have been contacted by the victim who claimed that it was more than an iPhone robbery because if the thief wanted it, he could have easily had it as it actually slipped from his hands and fell under the seat during the beating. The victim went on to say that this was more of a hate crime and has some interesting claims to back up his theory.
According to the victim;
“This was me on the bus that was attacked. The video doesn’t show the fact that the Bus Driver was not on the bus, he actually left the bus to talk to another bus driver. He was off the bus for at least 5-7 mins and this allowed more than enough time for this incident to take place. The attacked lasted 2-3 minutes and they left out the part where I actually grab the guy by his balls and twist and pull them. I am upset because if the bus driver had been on the bus, this never would have happened. Also, the lady with the kid is friends with the guy. The original video shows them talking for a long time, and right before he gets up, she takes her kid and picks him up and moves her next to her.
This was more of a hate crime than it was from him trying to steal my iPhone. If he wanted the iPhone it fell from my hands and slid under the seat. My interview was pulled from the local website possibly because I mentioned hate crime.”
When it comes down to it, whether this is actually a hate crime or just a simple (and poor) attempt to steal an iPhone it was a horrible thing to do. Sadly the assailant still has not been captured.

The victim may have mislabeled this attack as a hate crime (I’m not sure because I cannot manage to find any “hate” related motive e.g. racism, sexism) but in my opinion it was simply assault, not a hate crime.
