How to trade in your iPhone for a 3G model

Today, AT&T released a check-list of criteria that iPhone users need to meet in order to qualify for an upgrade to the faster 3G model. If you’re an AT&T customer with an iPhone, you fall into either of these two categories:

If you bought your iPhone before May 27, you’re basically not going to get a smoking deal on anything. AT&T will allow you to upgrade to the 3G model for the regular subsidized price of $199 (8GB) or $299 (16GB), with one small huge catch- you have to sign a new two-year contract, regardless of how far along you are with your current contract.

If you bought your iPhone on or after May 27, AT&T is going to forgive your media illiteracy and will allow you to exchange your old iPhone for a new 3G model. Plus, they’ll reimburse the price difference between the old and the new, minus a 10% restocking fee.

If you do decide to upgrade, remember that you will also be required to ditch your $20-a-month EDGE data plan for a spiffy $30-a-month 3G plan.

  1. I’m on the go phone plan and I wonder if they will even support 3g on iPhone? I wonder if I am better off buying an old one and trading it in on July 11th for the refund (minus the 10% restocking fee?? Any suggestions???

  2. Or just sell it on Craig’s List. Sold my 1st generation 8GB (originally $400)for $350! Now, I can pick up the new iPhone and have quite a bit left over for service or whatever.

  3. Since we were all required to sign a two-year contract with AT&T (those of us who didn’t unlock the phone, that is), are we even legally allowed to transfer ownership?

That is, if I sell my iPhone to someone on eBay or Craigslist, will AT&T allow me to transfer the contract to them? Or would I still be on the hook for all of their call charges for another year or so? would all the bills still come to me? etc., etc.?

  4. If you sell your iPhone, you are stuck with your plan. You need to remove the SIM card and notify AT&T that you will not be using an iPhone as your handset so they can remove your data plan from your bill. The new owner will need to get a SIM card and a new contract to be able to use the phone. However, if you sell your iPhone you will make yourself inelugible to upgrade to the 3G handset at the lower price. I’m giving my iPhone to my partner AFTER activating my new iPhone 3G.
