How to: Create free ringtones for your iPhone

For some reason, we never tire of having our current favorite song playing as a ringtone on our cell phones. There are several ways to create free ringtones, so you won’t always have to shell out an extra buck every time your tastes change. The Apple Blog came up with a way to create ringtones without third-party software- all you need is iTunes. You use the Get Info field to cut the song down to 30 seconds, then convert it to AAC, drag it to your desktop, delete it from iTunes, change the extension to .m4a or .m4r, and bring it back to iTunes. It may not be the easiest way, but it sure beats having to pay apple close to $2 per ringtone.

  1. or, you could just use the actual song in your itunes without deleting it by going to mobile17.com.

  4. Under the “share” menu in Garageband there is a export ringtone to itunes option. You can edit the song within GB as well.

  5. Another advantage of using Garage Band vs. iTunes is that you can edit up to a 40 second ring tone vs. 30.  You can also overlay multiple tunes (tracks) to create a unique ring tone that nobody else has.

  6. I was wondering if anybody can help me out, I cant seem to change the file type.  Im using windows vista and have right clicked and it only changes the name.  can anybody help?

  7. Nerdnuts. You don’t have file extensions showing. click “Computer” if you don’t have the File menu option showing; hit your alt key. Then at the top click on Tools, Folder Options, Then when the window pops up choose View. Uncheck the box that says “Hide extensions for known file types” click ok. Then you can change the file extension of files. Hope that works for you.
