ApolloIM and MobileChat join forces
Both ApolloIM and MobileChat were jailbreak applications for chatting on the go with your iPhone/iPod touch. Alex Schaefer, ApolloIM's founder, has recently joined the MobileChat development team. In a blog posting by the developer of MobileChat, he said that both applications underwent "friendly competition" and that, while there was no clear winner in the iPhone IM business, users got the benefit from the ongoing competition. Now that Alex has joined the other team, you can expect that MobileChat will only get better. The post goes on to mention that Alex will be working on stability and user experience for the application.
MobileChat definitely got off to a rough start on launch day due to server problems, but seems to be working much better now.

MobileChat has had a rough start indeed, but they're making nice progress. I think it'll end up being the marquee app for chatting.

Landscape is one of the few things in MobileChat that does work for me. It's quite nice!

I still can't get MobileChat to work. I'm stuck on version 1.0 and iTunes will not let me update. I know the current version is 3.0 and it sucks to be stuck in version 1.0 due to an iTunes bug. If anyone knows how to force an update I'll be extremely grateful. iTunes support seems to be no where to be found. Very frustrating.

Wow, I wasn't even aware of the fact that they're on 3.0.
When I check here with Get Info in iTunes I have 1.0 as well. I even tried deleting it from iTunes and redownload it, but I still get 1.0.

Try updating via the App Store on the device.

Versions 1 and 2 were the jailbroken versions. Version 3 is the first one on the appstore (and shows up as 1.0 because that is the first version the appstore had)

Thank you Captain Obvious, it can't get any worse (only kidding)
But seriously, it has been painful to start. But if they can get it working well it will be awesome. Here's to hoping for updates in the AppStore soon!

I bought this app and so far I am extremely disappointed with it.
As a developer there is no way I would release a product that is of this quality. It is not a 'Gold' release.
I have experienced all sorts of problems on my v1 iPhone (I have only tried using MSN though).
• The app crashes randomly
• Difficulties logging in
• Messages not coming though when sent
• no way to minimize the keyboard
• Buddies are only displayed as on or offline no away or busy states
• Buddy names do not appear only their e-mail
• Buddy photos not showing
Generally it is pretty poor at the moment and I would advise anyone to hold of buying this. If they must use something that is 'half-decent' then go for Palringo for the time being as it is free.
I am sure that there will be a few more IM applications coming to the App Store soon
